Will the Real Eredar Please Stand Up?

Will the Real Eredar Please Stand Up?

- RivanLord

S ome WoW players seem to be very excited about playing the "new Alliance race," the Draenei, but I am not among them. Sadly, in the creation of this new race, and I emphasize that they are a new race, regardless of the previous "Draenei" to be found in game, Blizzard has ripped up, stomped upon, pissed on, and finally shat upon their own lore in the creation of this "new Alliance race." The end result is that the Alliance now has a race of dimension-jumping, spaceship flying, blue aliens. Gratz to all those who said the new Alliance race would be the Protoss. You were right.

Let's examine the evidence. From Chapter 1 of the WoW "Official History":

"Over time, demonic entities made their way into the Titans' worlds from the Twisting Nether, and the Pantheon elected its greatest warrior, Sargeras, to act as its first line of defence. A noble giant of molten bronze, Sargeras carried out his duties for countless millennia, seeking out and destroying these demons wherever he could find them. Over the eons, Sargeras encountered two powerful demonic races, both of which were bent on gaining power and dominance over the physical universe.

New Draenei The eredar, an insidious race of devilish sorcerers, used their warlock magics to invade and enslave a number of worlds. The indigenous races of those worlds were mutated by the eredar's malevolent powers and turned into demons themselves. Though Sargeras' nearly limitless powers were more than enough to defeat the vile eredar, he was greatly troubled by the creatures' corruption and all-consuming evil. Incapable of fathoming such depravity, the great Titan began to slip into a brooding depression. Despite his growing unease, Sargeras rid the universe of the warlocks by trapping them within a corner of the Twisting Nether."

So, it seems from what we have here that the Eredar were a race of evil warlocks, bent on the invasion and enslavement of many worlds. It was their evil and depravity that caused the noble Titan Sargeras to slip into a brooding depression. Now the new "information" on the origins of the new Alliance race "Draenei":

"Nearly twenty-five thousand years ago, the eredar race arose on the world of Argus. They were extremely intelligent and had a natural affinity for magic in all its myriad forms. Using their gifts, they developed a vast and wondrous society.

Archimonde Unfortunately the eredar's accomplishments caught the attention of Sargeras, the Destroyer of Worlds. He had already begun his Burning Crusade to eradicate all life from the cosmos, and he believed that the brilliant eredar would be pivotal in leading the vast demonic army he was gathering. Thus, he contacted the eredar's three most prominent leaders: Kil'jaeden, Archimonde, and Velen. In exchange for the loyalty of the eredar race, Sargeras offered untold power and knowledge.

Although the offer sounded very tempting, Velen had a vision of the future that filled him with sick dread. Sargeras had spoken the truth: the eredar who joined the Dark Titan would indeed gain enormous power and knowledge. However, the eredar would themselves be transformed into demons.

Velen saw the Legion in all its terrible might and witnessed the destruction it would wreak upon all of creation. He hastened to warn Kil'jaeden and Archimonde, but they dismissed his concerns, for they had been enticed by Sargeras' promises. They gave Sargeras their allegiance and were transformed into colossal beings of depthless evil."

So now we have an obvious contradiction that has much of the community scratching their heads. In the "Official History," the noble Titan Sargeras is corrupted by what he sees as the unfathomable evil of the Eredar. In this new "Draenei" race explanation, Sargeras is an evil Titan and has already begun his "Burning Crusade" to wipe out Creation; so, he decides to recruit the powerful (but generally otherwise good) Eredar to his cause, thereby transforming them into evil warlocks of doom. Yeah, great job there with keeping to your lore, Blizzard. Giant gaping lore retcons (retroactive continuity) for the lose.

That's not even the worst of it, folks. Let's take a look at the Draenei as we have known them until now.

Draenei "The noble orc clans roamed the open prairies and hunted for sport, while the inquisitive draenei built crude cities within the world's towering cliffs and peaks.

Under Blackhand's command, the Horde set out to test itself against the simple draenei.

Over the course of a few months, the Horde eradicated nearly every draenei living on Draenor. Only a scattered handful of survivors managed to evade the orcs' awesome wrath."

So, we are to believe that these "simple Draenei" who "built crude cities within the world's towering cliffs and peaks" and were almost completely eradicated by "the orcs' awesome wrath" were the same Draenei who were "extremely intelligent and had a natural affinity for magic in all its myriad forms"?! These are the same "Eredar" who, using their gifts, "developed a vast and wondrous society" on the world of Argus?! These are the same "brilliant Eredar" that Sargeras believed "would be pivotal in leading the vast demonic army he was gathering"?!

I don't know about you, but I don't think it's getting any clearer. To make matter worse, it seems that the Draenei had a "shamanistic heritage" as explained in the devolution of the original Eredar Draenei into the now "Broken Draenei" who remain in Draenor:

"The Broken, led by the great Akama, fell prey to the demons' sinister influence, and just like the orcs, they too were changed by the corruption. Though they lost some of their former powers, the Broken still present a clear danger to all of Illidan's enemies throughout Outland. It almost seems like a miracle that the Broken somehow managed to preserve their shamanistic heritage, yet no one can say for sure how many of their traditions are still intact."

Keep in mind that these shamanistic Draenei are the same ones who were blessed by the enigmatic Naaru race:

"with Light-given knowledge and power. The naaru explained that there were other forces in the cosmos that would stand against the Burning Legion. One day the naaru would forge them into a single unstoppable army of the Light. Deeply affected by the naaru's words, the draenei vowed to honor the Light and uphold the naaru's altruistic ideals."

This alteration, of course, it meant to explain why the blue, space alien Eredar (evil warlock race) "Draenei" are now able to play as Paladins in the Alliance. Riiight. Basically, take all suspension of disbelief and throw it straight out the window.

"The original Paladin order-otherwise known as the Knights of the Silver Hand, or just the Silver Hand-was founded prior to the Second War by the Archbishop Alonsus Faol. In that conflict, the Holy Paladins led the battle against the Orcish Horde and helped to save the lands of Lordaeron from ruin. . The former order led by Faol, the Holy Order of Northshire Clerics, was devastated during the First War. When Faol refounded the order in Lordaeron, he recruited noble knights and former clerics to train in the ways of war and the Light. Even a few members of the priesthood decided to take up the more physical and steadfast path. In Alonsus Chapel in Stratholme, Uther the Lightbringer was anointed the first of the paladins. The Silver Hand was born."

Now, of course, we have Blue Alien Interdimensional Space Pallies with TAILS from the planet Draenor (or is it Argus?)

Speaking of which, it seems these "simple Draenei" who "built crude cities within the world's towering cliffs and peaks" and were almost completely eradicated by "the orcs' awesome wrath" were the same Draenei who TRAVEL THROUGH SPACE IN INTERDIMENSIONAL SPACESHIPS!

To wit:

"The Draenei hold no affinity for certain Horde races. They outright hate the Orcs, who nearly drove the Draenei to extinction in Outland. And more recently, the Blood Elves stole technology from the Draenei and also sabotaged their dimensional ship, which crash landed on Azeroth."

Like I said, Protoss. Oh, and for those of you who didn't know, the Blood Elves now moonlight as Space Pirates. ROFLMAO! Blizzard!!! What have you done to your lore?! I'm sorry, folks, but I know that I'm not the only one who chose to play in the Warcraft universe because I love the story. I've played all of the other RTS Warcraft games, I've studied the lore more and more since WoW first came out, both in game and out, and I've come to really gain an appreciation of the lore that Blizzard has created to enable this rich and multifaceted universe. I always appreciate how an individual quest ties in with the greater socio-political context of the Warcraft universe. That is why perversions of the storyline such as the ones Blizzard seems to be ready to introduce upset me so, as well as make me distance myself from the game. I could spend several more hours suggesting easy, lore-appropriate ways that Blizzard could've introduced the Draenei as a playable race, but I'm not going to waste my time. That's Blizzard's job, and they fucked it up.

Look, for those of you who always wanted to play a Blue Space Alien Paladin in the World of Warcraft, congratulations. You finally have your day. But, if Blizzard is going to destroy their lore in every expansion to make sure that new races are "c001," then may I just say for all of us fans of rich, in-depth games, based in a universe with an engaging history and environment, the release date for The Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar can't come soon enough. For more information, please go to lotr and I look forward to seeing you in Middle-earth!

Cheers,

RivanLord

PS: Chris Metzen, lead lore writer at Blizzard has made this Official Response.

But, I still think blue space alien pallies from another dimension is an idiotic idea.

Seriously chill dude If this is your reason to abandon WoW forever then go ahead the community is better without negative fanatics like you

No I agree with him on this. Im not going to abandon WoW by any means. But this is a serious mistake on blizzards part and seriously tarnishes my opinion of the upcomingr race. Wouldnt it have been simpler just to say that these where the same Broken ones who you meet in Warcraft III TFT. Then they could have traveled through the portal met with the alliance. Voila new race. No violations of lore.

Yeah it seems like its a conflict but one that they might be able to fix with some editing. For example they might be able to address it by having where Sargeras defeated the eredar the first time and then they turned to peace and later after he turned evil he found some had survived and decided to use them.

This game sucks more and more for everyday that passes tbh maybe its time to go DAoC classic or play Guild Wars.

Im thinking that RivanLord was on to something when he said that the new Alliance race should be the Protoss. Rather than just fouling up the lore they should combine universes. I can see it now... a expeditionary force from Koprulu lands on the distant world of Azeroth. En Taro Adun baby Let there be Dragoons in Azshara and Reavers outside Stormwind. *beep* maybe Blizzard should think about putting in a Dark Portal to Auir. Now thatd be sweet...

Posted by Electromancer at 2006-05-17 16:33:11
Ill agree that they rip their lore to *beep* but I cant wait for my paladin from space. Uh houston I think were gonna have a problem here.

Posted by Var at 2006-05-17 22:22:32
Please dont let us stop you Kimbuktuboboooba. waves ByeBye Anyway as I said its an error but one they can fix if they want with some editing and they have multiple ways to do so. They could even somehow have it involve Nozdormu somehow *shrug*
